All couples participating in a PGD programme facilitated by Gender Selection need to understand, and be reassured by a few key points:
The technique is highly reliable in determining the gender of embryos but, as with almost every medical and scientific technique, there are no absolutes. In practice we are confident that viable pregnancies achieved through the programme will result in babies of the chosen gender.
It is important for couples to understand that the last part of the treatment – embryo biopsy – cannot be carried out in the UK. This procedure is performed at an associate clinic abroad. The whole process takes up to five weeks – with three weeks of monitoring in the UK, travel time and one week or a little longer at an associate clinic abroad. It is also important for all prospective patients to note that, in accordance with international practice in fertility treatment, costs quoted cover treatment up to and including embryo transfer. Any subsequent medical costs and requirements are not included in our gender selection treatment costs.
The process of carrying out gender selection on newly formed eight-cell embryos presents minimal risk of damaging the quality or viability of the embryo. At this early stage of life, the eight cells represent the life support system of the untouched nucleus of the embryo which contains all the genetic material that will eventually become the foetus. The removal of a single cell of this supporting material has no adverse effect on the successful development of the foetus.
The programme is expected to produce good pregnancy success rates based on the ‘normal’ fertility of the participating couples, especially if 2 or more embryos are transferred.
This is established programme which has been validated over hundreds of treatments.
This programme is fully explained on this website and in our online information. In the interests of all patients, no variations to this treatment programme are permissible under any circumstances. Anyone unwilling to comply with this provision will be excluded from the programme.
Gender Selection acts from outside the UK as a facilitator to enable treatment to be arranged and carried out in fully-accredited clinics in countries in which the gender selection treatment process is permitted. Initial tests and assessments can be arranged in the UK.
